Cute Ghost Cookies for Halloween

Cute Ghost Cookies for Halloween

I really love a cookie that has the smallest amount of food dye possible.  That is what is so great about these cute ghost cookies for Halloween.  The food dye is at a minimum.  If time is an issue and you are making cookies to give as gifts stick with something simple like these cookies.  What is fun about the cute ghosts for Halloween is all the different expressions. Practice ahead of time on paper to find a design that works.  I have made the mistake over and over again of experimenting with design on the actual cookie.  It works, sometimes.  If it looks cute on paper, it will look even cuter “on cookie.”

To make these cute ghost cookies you will need:

  • A ghost cookie, I am using a Wilton Halloween cookie cutter, cookie dough recipe found here
  • Royal icing in white, thick to outline and thin to flood, or fill in the cookie – Royal icing recipe here
  • Black royal icing for the details.  Dye to charcoal gray and wait a couple of days for the color to develop.
  • eyeballs (make them 24 hours in advanced, thick white royal icing with thick black royal icing centers)

Outline the cookies with the thicker royal icing.  Immediately cover in the thinner flood icing.  Allow the ghosts to dry overnight, or at least 30 minutes.  Carefully add the eyeballs.  If you don’t have royal icing eyeballs ready to go wait for the icing to dry a little bit (yes another 20 minutes or so) and pipe white circles for the eyes.  Immediately add the black centers for the pupils.  Use black royal icing for the mouth.  You could also wait until the next day and use and edible ink marker in black to draw the mouths in.

Experiment with different expressions on these cute ghost cookies.  These would be adorable in a plastic bag with a Halloween bow.  I don’t know why we always make so many colors.  A tray of these cookies with different faces would have a wonderful effect.  You could also make ghosts of varying sizes.

Happy Halloween and Happy Cookie Decorating.
