Cute Cat Cookies for Halloween

I was surprised at how much I liked these cute cat cookies.  I used my favorite sugar cookie recipe and a Wilton Halloween Cookie Cutter.  Sugar cookie recipe found here, Royal icing recipe found here.  I see so many fancy decorated sugar cookies, but I always come back to liking the simple ones decorated in several colors.  Keep reading for more thoughts on my “5 cats and a bat” Halloween cookies.

We made so many cookies late before Halloween.  I think the girls were awake until midnight, mostly preparing the icing.  They insisted on every Halloween color and actually are getting pretty good at thinning the icing for outlining and flooding.  When looking at these I am thinking a lot about eyeball placement.  It can make the world of difference in the characterization of a cookie.  Place them far apart and the cute cat cookie has more of a cartoon look.  Place them closer together and it changes the emotion of the cat.  Why am I over-analyzing this.

I guess my point is, if you have a simple shape, bring it to life by adding lots of colors.  It is so much work, but it makes the decorating fun.  These cute cat cookies are simple, but were one of our favorites for Halloween 2012.

As to the eyeballs used – really simple.  Use left-over royal icing.  Make a white circle and moments later add a black dot to the center.  Try to get them to look about the same.
