So these Day of the Dead cookies look kind of freaky, don’t they?  Well… we lived in Mexico during a Day of the Dead celebration and this holiday is just that, freaky for those who aren’t used to the tradition surrounding this holiday.

During this period, all over Mexico you see colorful skulls, where a sugar artist will customize each one in honor of a deceased relative.  So I made these Day of the Dead cookies with my experience in Mexico in mind.  I saved piping or thick consistency royal icing for this purpose and had fun just playing around with the icing, trying to capture the spirit of this holiday.  I took my kids through the famous Mercado, or market in Toluca dedicated to this holiday.

This holiday is all about sugar skulls, and ofrendas – ‘offerings’ to those who have passed away.   I was so impressed with the unseen sugar artists in Mexico who probably spent months preparing for this holiday.

I could go on and on about these sugar skulls… I just want you to realize, the freakier the better when it comes to Day of the Dead cookies – Galletas para el Dia de los Muertos.

Once you have made Day of the Dead cookies set up an Ofrenda – or offering for those who have passed away.  Here is the ofrenda at my daughter’s preschool.  I love the bright colors.  I need to stop, I’m starting to miss Mexico a little too much.  So use lots and lots of colors and make them creepy!

You can find more information on how I made these cookies on a previous post.  Thanks for looking.  Gracias por venir!
